Like the womens’s team, the Stevens-The Cyclery men are racing at BC Superweek this week. Braydon Bourne, Conor O’Brien, Ben Andrew and guest rider Stephen Rockwood from Newfoundland took a couple days to find their legs after the flight, as Bourne reports:
The Tour de Delta has come to an end, concluding the opening weekend of the 2014 BC Superweek. Stage 1– the MK Delta Criterium — was an incredibly fast crit with a hill that taxed everyone’s legs a little too much after the flight out west. Our guest rider Stephen Rockwood went down hard, but fortunately is okay.
The second stage, the Brenco Criterium, was 60 laps of a 900m course through the quaint downtown of Ladner. Well attended with tons of primes, the guys took some shots at big solo-flyers with the hopes of some taking home some cash. Coming close, but unsuccessful, they settled for some pack-finishes and the delicious post-race Salmon burgers.
The queen stage was the final one: the White Spot Delta UCI 1.2, which started at noon, instead of the usual evening crit routine and was set to be a difficult day. A very technical 17-corner lap completed 13 times made up the 151km road course complete with sun, rain and lots of locals on their front lawns. A few crashes saw guest rider Stephen hit the deck again, and caused some unfortunate gaps for large chucks of the field. The Stevens boys tried their hand at some early moves, all of which proved unsuccessful on the fast circuit. Optum p/b Kelly benefits rode an excellent race, resulting in a 1st and 2nd place finish for the men in orange and black.
Monday is the only rest day this week, so legs are up, and blueberries are being consumed by the handful as we get stoked for the rest of the week.
