Stevens-The Cyclery women tackle Tour de Delta

Amélie Bruneau, Ariane Bonhomme, Ellen Watters, Carrie Cartmill, Emily Flynn and Annie Foreman-Mackey traveled out to the Vancouver area to tackle BC Superweek. The races kicked off this weekend with the Tour of Delta. Annie Foreman-Mackey reports:

We are incredibly lucky to be staying with warm and welcoming host families. Although it’s a tight schedule of morning spins, evening races most days, and as much rest and recovery as we can get, we’ve already managed a little bit of sightseeing. Emily and I headed down to Point Roberts with our host, Deb, to watch the sunset over the Pacific the first day we got here.

July 4: MK Delta Criterium
30 laps x 1.2 km

In true BC fashion, the MK Delta Crit started off with some rain and slick roads. A challenging course with a long uphill drag on the far side blew the race to pieces. Carrie and Ellen rode incredibly well, frequently off the front in moves, demonstrating that the Stevens team is here to play! Carrie finished the day with an awesome 10th place, giving her a well-deserved call-up to the start line in the next day’s race. (click here for full results)

July 4: Brenco Criterium

A fast, flat course, in downtown Ladner, the Brenco Crit is always a fun one. The streets are lined with spectators, and it was up to the riders to put on a good show. It proved to be a solid night for all of the riders. We were active throughout the entire race, initiating moves and supporting each other. The race ultimately came down to a group sprint in which the Optum team again demonstrated their strength and cohesiveness. Unfortunately a perfectly positioned Carrie was taken out in the crash on the final turn… But she was up and ready to race the next morning at the White Spot Road Race! What a trooper. July 6: UCI 1.2 White Spot Road Race
8 laps x 11.63 km

With the White Spot Road Race being a UCI status race this year (YAY!), there were full teams in attendance from TIBCO, Optum, Vanderkitten, among others. This made for a good, hard and exciting race. Each lap of the course included 17 turns, making the race like a giant 2.5 hour crit! Ignoring our tired legs, we raced aggressively, trying to get a move up the road. Carrie and I worked really hard to instigate attacks and to be in every dangerous move. Unfortunately, nothing was being let out of sight of the charging pack. Ellen’s day ended early with a badly timed flat, while Emily and Amélie had breakthrough rides, flying up the climb each lap and finishing comfortably in the bunch! (click here for full results)

Next up, we have a rest day before tackling the UBC Grand Prix on Tuesday and the legendary Gastown Grand Prix on Wednesday! For more info on BC Superweek, click here.
