Race reports: Five more podiums for Stevens women

It says a lot about the season the girls have been having that when a third-place result got missed when counting up this weekend’s results.

One of the behind the scenes things that happens on Stevens is the amount of time that the riders from different provinces spend trying to speak in the language they are less comfortable in.  While riders like Carrie Cartmill make commendable efforts to try to speak  French as much as they can, the reality is that with few bilingual anglophones on the team it is more often than not the Quebec riders who shoulder the bulk of the efforts to speak and write in English.

So on that note, part of this week’s report is in the other official language:
Course contre-la-montre à Granby — samedi le 11 mai
— Adriane Provost

Not to be forgotten, Ariane Bonhomme also chalked up a bronze medal performance in the junior event, having just returned from the Pan American track trials in Los Angeles.  Ariane narrowly missed out on the win by less than 20 seconds.  However she should have a new weapon in time for nationals – a hot new Stevens Chrono bike.

Sunday saw Annie Forman-“Svein Tuft”-Mackey compete in the Lake of Bays Ontario Cup road race.  While Annie sits second overall in the series, this event had the added significance of being a Canada Summer Games qualifier.  While the weather didn’t exactly cooperate with rain, sleet and snow for the duration of the event, Annie rode a strong and aggressive race to chalk up third place.  To date Annie has podiumed in three of the four Ontario Cups, won one, and not finished worse than fifth. At this point I (Chris Reid) am going to go out on a limb and say she will be named to the Games Team for Ontario.

Annie sent us this picture of proof as to how lovely the weather was.  Please note the ice on the Rudy Project sunglasses.

Women’s Woodstock Cycling Grand Prix – Woodstock N.Y.

Meanwhile Catherine Dessureault made the solo trip to compete in this women’s-only Pro 1-2 event in New York State.  It was a successful solo mission as Catherine took home not just second place and her second podium of the weekend but the Queen of the Mountains competition as well!  Success in this hilly road race, organised by former Olympian Martin Bruhn, bodes well for Dessureault heading into this weekend’s Gatineau Grand Prix UCI weekend — the team’s “home” race and one of the big objectives of the season.

If you are in the National Capital Region come on down and watch some of the world’s best riders race in our very own backyard.  Stop by and say Hi at the Stevens/Cyclery tent while you are at it!
