The Clarence-Rockland Classic just east of Ottawa on April 7 officially marked the start of the 2013 season for the Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery men’s team.
With all of the riders in attendance and ready to rock, the plan was to be well represented in any move and put our stamp on the end of the race.
The team worked really well together. Conor O’Brien gave Derrick St. John a rear wheel after Derrick had a rain coat fly into his cassette. Marc Boudreau and Steve Keeping helped Derrick get back on. It sealed Conor’s fate for the day, but his efforts were not in vain.
The team was present at the front with Braydon Bourne and JS Perron following moves and attacks. Former national champion Aaron Fillion (Ride With Rendall) had escaped the group with about 15 km to go and established a 35-second gap. The Stevens team worked well to hold the gap, then close it down with about 3 km to go and send Matteo Dal-Cin in hot pursuit.
Former Stevens rider Mike Woods lead a furious chase up the final escarpment and brought a group with him to Aaron and Matteo. With Derrick and Steve Keeping part of this group, the odds looked good with the final move containing three Stevens riders.
After a few attacks and reshufflings towards the finale, no one was able to match Matteo as he powered away smoothly from the 11 others to take Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery’s first win of the season and set a good standard for a solid team effort so early on in the year.<
The next race for the team is Almonte Roubaix on April 14, if weather permits.
