The next time you feel it’s too cold to ride, spare a thought for Stephen Keeping.
The Stevens Racing presented by The Cyclery rider is more than 1,000 km into his quest to ride from Ottawa to Florida at the coldest time of the year. When Keeping set out from Ottawa on Jan. 21, it was -25C. It was more than a week before it got warm enough for him to take his ski goggles and face mask off!
Keeping’s epic ride is inspiring thousands through his blog and through media coverage. But he didn’t set out to become famous — he’s just trying to lay on a good training base before the 2013 season.
It’s only fitting that the cycling community Keeping has inspired should contribute to keep him warm and safe on his quest. Keeping has a very tight budget, but the last thing we want is for him to take a pass on getting a warm hotel room because he’s short on cash. So we decided to launch a 50-50 draw to help him out.
Here’s how it works: Using this form, you guess the total mileage — to the nearest kilometre — of Keeping’s trek from Vanier in Ottawa, Ontario, to the Bicycle House bike shop in Tallahassee, Florida. Add your guess of the total number of days Keeping’s trip is going to take. Then use your PayPal account to send $20 to firstname.lastname@example.org. Put your mileage guess in your payment email, and then sit back and wait to see what happens.
Half of the money raised will go to help Keeping as he slowly cranks his way south. A quarter will go towards supporting the Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery team riders (100% of this money will go to offset expenses the riders would otherwise have to pay out of pocket — none of it will be used to cover to administration costs).
The rest of the money will go to the lucky 50-50 winner!
We’ll announce the winner when Keeping reaches his goal, which could be any time between mid-February to early March. Feel free to enter more than once — it’s a worthy cause to support. Good luck!
